In the last month the trees have been stripped of leaves and the temparatures have plummeted but don’t be put off: winter at Chenjiapu has a different kind of magic. Yesterday we experienced the first snowfall at the start of a hike up the wall. Quiet, breathtakingly cold and. as always, a welcome respite from the grime and bustle of Beijing.

This photo was taken last weekend: The Chen family yard is full of flowers and leafy vegetables.

From now until late October is the best hiking season: mellow weather and all kinds of delicious fresh vegetables, fruit and nuts. And the Chen’s also have wild honey, bought from migrant bee-keepers who spend their summers in the wild mountain valleys around Chenjiapu village and across Huailai County in Hebei and Beijing’s Yanqing County.

Below is a photo of a rainbow above the Great Wall, also taken from the Chen’s yard last weekend.

In other news, a couple of Danes spent a few days at the Chen family farm and wrote a few blog posts about it.
